You’ve probably heard about how crucial keyword research can be for your article marketing success, but like many people you may be intimidated at the thought of figuring out what your keywords are.

When I first heard about keywords I was intrigued, but overwhelmed because I just wasn’t familiar with the terminology. I thought it would be like doing calculus or physics–really cerebral and technical.

Despite my misgivings, I started out by doing a free trial at one of the major keyword research tools, and I was shocked at how enjoyable it was. It was almost addictive–I could barely tear myself away from doing the research.

I wanted to share this information with you in case you’re submitting articles and you feel like you don’t want to do research for keywords because it sounds hard. I promise, it’s not. It’s actually really fun.

Here are 5 reasons why doing keyword research is addictive:

1 – It’s like mind reading.

Have you ever wondered what your potential customers are thinking as they search for things on the web?

When you do keyword research you’ll have that information as cold hard facts right before you. It’s like you’re able to read the minds of the people you want to attract. How useful is that?!

You can see exactly what people are typing into Google and the other search engines, and you can see how many people are searching for those exact phrases. This type of information is crucial because then you can create content (like articles) that satisfies those questions that your target market is asking.

2 – It’s completely unexpected.

If you think you can guess what your potential customers are typing into Google, think again. Whenever I do keyword research, I’m amazed at what people are typing into Google for my niche.

3 – It’s surprisingly simple.

You know how you anticipate that something is going to be really hard but then when you start doing it it shocks you at how simple it really is? Well, that’s what doing keyword research is like. You think it’s going to be all dry and technical, but when you start doing it you’re overwhelmed with relief because you discover that it’s really not that hard.

4 – It gives you ideas for articles.

This is one of the biggest reasons why doing keyword research is enjoyable. It can be a challenge to come up with article topics, but when you do keyword research an outside source is giving you hard data that tells you exactly what your target audience is yearning to read about.

You can use the phrases that you discover in the process of doing research as inspiration for articles. You can also use the exact wording for titles for a really optimized piece of content. When the phrasing of the keyword is the same or similar to the keyword phrase itself, it helps Google to associate the keyword with your website, making it more likely that Google will rank your site higher when people search for that keyword phrase.

5 – It puts you in the driver’s seat.

One of the most daunting feelings associated with marketing your own website is that you don’t know exactly what you’re shooting for or how to get there. But when you do keyword research, you are arming yourself with information that puts you in control.

You know what keywords you’re targeting. You know how many people are searching for those terms (and that helps you to gauge the potential traffic benefit from that phrase). You know what sorts of things to write about and topics that will be in demand with readers.
